Kelly Michaelis
I did an internship at a worldwide firm, where I was offered a full
time position after graduation, but I decided that I wanted to work
for a more personal smaller firm. I went to the career fair at the
University of North Texas, and in a sea or black suits and ties, I
found Baker and Company, the only people there in jeans. The casual
atmosphere was what first caught my attention, but what has kept me
here was the fact that even though I’m new in the industry, I
work on clients that have 10 to 50 different entities. I get the
opportunity to see how decisions made at the business level effect
individuals on their tax return because I am assigned the business
return with the owners’ personal returns. I do all the returns
for any related entities and finish with the individual return for the
owner, so I get to see these big projects from start to finish. This
is something I never saw at the larger firms, where the owners
individual returns were processed in a completely separate department.
